During the holiday season, more than 800 naval recruits experienced an outpouring of Christmas cheer in Arlington Heights. The recruits, who were unable to travel home due to their training at the Great Lakes Naval Station, were welcomed into the homes of local families as part of the Adopt-a-Sailor program.

The recruits were treated to a festive day filled with home-cooked meals, phone calls to loved ones, and even a touch of Christmas shopping. Many of the participating families have been volunteering for years, opening their homes and hearts to these young men and women who serve their country. The program gives these recruits a much-needed break from their rigorous training schedule, offering a sense of home during the holiday season.

"We felt like rock stars," said one recruit, describing the warm reception they received from the community. To these recruits, the generosity and kindness of the Arlington Heights residents were overwhelming and deeply appreciated. Beyond the festive meals and the opportunity to relax, the recruits were touched by the heartfelt conversations and the genuine interest the families showed in their lives and experiences.

One volunteer family, the Andersons, hosted three recruits this year. They described the experience as "incredibly rewarding" and shared that the recruits quickly became part of their family. As a token of gratitude, the recruits often leave behind their unit's coin as a memento for their host families, symbolizing their unit's identity and their personal commitment to the service.

The Adopt-a-Sailor program, which began in 1981, has been a cherished tradition in Arlington Heights. It has not only brought joy to countless recruits but also strengthened the bond between the civilian community and the military. The program embodies the spirit of Christmas - a time of giving, sharing, and expressing gratitude for those who serve our country.
